Kittel College, established in 1968, is one of the prestigious educational institutions in North Karnataka fulfilling the needs of the public in the field of education. Kittel College, which functioned as a single unit from 1968 to 1988, was bifurcated in 1988 into Kittel Science College and Kittel Arts College,. Kittel Science College, with 35 years of history, celebrated its Silver Jubilee with great enthusiasm in 1993. Kittel Science College is permanently affiliated to Karnatak University, Dharwad. The College is centrally located and is within easy reach from any part of the city. Mr . R.S.Bangera, who is hailed, as the architect of modern Basel Mission was a visionary. He was very much instrumental in starting many educational institutions under the umbrella of Basel Mission Higher Education Centre. Thus Kittel College emerged as the Diocesan College of the then Mysore Northern Diocese of the Church of South India on 15th June 1968. The College is named after Dr. Ferdinand Kittel, a particularly in Dharwad from 1883-84 as a missionary and as Principal of Basel Mission High School. Prof. T. Reuben was the first principal of this college since its inception. Successively Rev. John Satyanathan, Prof. G. M. Philipose, Prof. S. J. Deodhar , Prof. J.S.Kuri enormously contributed for the overall development of this prestigious institution. Dr.(Smt.) Pramila Suresh served as principal since July 2004 to July 2010, Due to her sudden sad demise Dr.(Smt).C.M.Hombali took over as in charge principal for about eight months. During her tenure our college was reaccredited by NAAC at ‘B’ level with 2.78 points Presently Smt. Sushanti Prasannakumar is serving as Principal since 06-04-2011 enormous progress has been witnessed during this short period. The college will strive to set higher standards and achieve its targets through continues and sustainable efforts under the able and efficient leadership of present Principal. The growth of the college is both in quality and quality. The progress in terms of results is noteworthy. The number of students passing in Distinction, First Class and securing Ranks has tremendously increased. The College has to its credit nine University ranks and three Gold Medals. The students are constantly encouraged to participate in seminars, discussions, and intercollegiate competitions, which they have done and brought laurels to the College.The members of the staff are highly qualified and quite efficient to guide the students in their curricular and co-curricular activities of the College.

The Bombay legislature of the erstwhile Bombay Presidency established the Karnatak University through the Karnatak University Act 1949. It became a statutory University on 1st March 1950. The jurisdiction of the University covers Bagalkot, Belgaum, Bijapur, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri and Uttar Kannada districts. It has several Post Graduate centres. The university is offering courses in the faculties of Arts, Commerce, Education, Law, Management, Science and Technology and Social Sciences. There are 5 constituent colleges, offering UG courses in science, arts, commerce, fine arts, law and education. Karnatak Arts and Karnatak Science Colleges also offer P.G. Courses. There are 23 hostels in all, including a working women’s hostel and ladies’ hostels. These provide residential accommodation to 2600 students of UG and PG courses. Over the last 59 years the number of affiliated colleges has increased from a mere 34 to more than 528. The University provides wide options and choices – 43 PG courses, 4 advanced diplomas and 28 diplomas, 11 certificate courses, 26 M.Phil. and 42 Ph.D. programmes. Most of the Departments, on priority basis, incorporate interdisciplinary components in designing their curricula keeping in view the emerging thrust areas. During the last five years new state of the art technical courses have been introduced to compensate the loss of medical and engineering faculties and the consequent loss of revenue to the University. There are several self-financing courses, including an integrated course in Master of Tourism Administration, E-Commerce, M.Com. (Corporate Secretaryship), M. Sc. (Applied Genetics), M.Sc. (Biotechnology), M.Sc. (Computer Science), M.Sc. (Microbiology), MBA (CBCS), MBA (evening programme), MBA (International Business), MCA, MIM, P.G. Diploma in Bank Management and P.G. Diploma in Risk Management. The main campus in Pavate Nagar, comprising 750 acres, houses 43 Departments, Central Library and Auditoriums, Computer Centre, Stadium, indoor Badminton Hall, Gymnasium, Employment Information and Guidance Bureau, Students Home, Academic Staff College, Health Centre, Prasaranga, SC/ST/Cat-I/ BCM/ Cells, 2 Guest Houses, 2 Banks, Post Office, Main Canteen, Printing Press and two Museums in Kannada Research Institute Museum and Museum of Animals and Plants.
